一脉相承并不一定要循规蹈矩地如法炮制，也可以是非理性的反叛。这很好地体现在早期人本主义哲学上。意志主义的先导叔本华自称是康德哲学的继承者和完成者，生命哲学也直接渊源于意志主义，更别提新康德主义和新黑格尔主义了，他们更明显地从传统理性主义继承下来。但是，物极必反，这一潮流却走向了非理性。
不过这种转向也不是毫无根据可循的。从康德的先验批判哲学开始是欧洲理性主义发展的一个重要转折，它在吸收休谟不可知论的同时，通过对先验范畴与先验统觉的提出，强调了人的主体性。而费希特在此基础上更往非理性主义方向加深了一步。早期人本主义思潮就是在这种历史条件下诞生的。
早期人本主义主张世界的本源是生命或意志。当他们主张世界的本源是生命时，他们是客观唯心主义；当他们主张世界的本源是意志时，他们是主观唯心主义。但其实非要用主观、客观来框定它们并不是一件非常合适的事情，因为在他们那里，主观唯心和客观唯心基本上是融通的。
此外，他们在方法论上反对科学分析，主张以非理性的直觉来体认世界。因此，浓厚的非理性色彩便成了他们的基本特征。
意志主义和生命哲学的特点：
把哲学对象归结为“意志”或“生命”；反对或贬低观察、实验、逻辑的自然科学方法，提倡内心体验的非理性方法，因而又被称为“非理性主义”。
新康德主义的特点：
通过对康德哲学中主体性理论的夸大与强调，使人本主义思潮进一步主观唯心化。
新黑格尔主义的特点：
通过对黑格尔哲学的唯心主义因素与辩证法因素的歪曲或抛弃使之非理性主义化。严格说来它不属于人本主义，但是它的非理性因素可被归结为人本主义思潮的范围。
